Kung 18 ka na? – albert banico

Kapag 18 ka na? – albert banico

Dapat natin itong alagaan, pahalagahan at ingatan.

Hindi maaring patuloy an gating pagluluksa, kailangang magpatuloy an gating buhay.

Narito ang balita mula sa William and Mary Campus sa Virginia: In the wake of the shock of President Nichol’s sudden resignation, members of the Faculty of the College of Arts and Science issued a call for fellow faculty-members to join them in a “Strike”, refusing to hold regular classes on Wednesday (2/13) and Thursday (2/14), during a spontaneous rally of over 500 students, staff, and faculty in support of Our President.

Samantala, narito pa ang ilan sa kanilang ginawang pagkilos: Following this announcement, members of the William & Mary College Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) in Virginia announced a student strike in Solidarity with their professors and, unequivocally, Comrades-in-arms. That night, over 1500 students expressed their grief for our community’s loss of a great man by congregating in front of the President’s House to intone to Gene Nichol the Alma Mater of Our College.

I wonder what do you mean by student power? Is it the student themselves are limited to their existence as a student inside the campus? In the philippines, we call it, people power, because the youth are just a part of the larger society. in fact, inside the campus, students are not the only sector that need to be heard in a process called democracy. What will be the shape of that student power movement when they already completed their schooling and they belong already to the institutions that they rejected before?

Corruption is a tradition of Leaders in the Government

After reading of the article my reactions: (by Michelle Ann Refuerzo)

Corruption is not a monopoly of the Adults

Nowadays, many young generations become a voice less, and most of all blind on what's happening in our country. They just ignoring because in their mind it's just a simple or small problem, but they didn't know it's a big problem that all of us are affected most especially our young generations.

I think why young people afraid to speak whats on their mind and heart just because they don't want to involve in politics. Politics that is so dirty. So our generation instead of involving their selves they just make their life busy in doing study, sports, computer games, and other the things that young generations make their life happy for what they are doing.

I noticed some of the article involved CORRUPTION. Talking about corruption in our country.
I think one of the problem in our country is Corruption of the politics, Oligarchs, and those people who are in a higher class family. One of the question in my mind since I grew up why is that people who are rich are becoming rich because they love their money or they corrupt the money of the the Filipino people. Maybe corruption is tradition of our leader in government.
Lesson in life

After reading the article of lesson in life. I realize how important me to live. All my reflection in life become more meaningful and colorful. I appreciate reading this article. All I can say is only one chance to live for life make it more meaningful and cherish all what's happening in your life especially the happiest and most memorable event came in your life. Not only happy but the sad moment that you learned and give u strength to face all the trouble. “ the best teacher in our life is experience”. And that is true.
Ang bagong liga
Being youth today, the only thing I can do is study hard so in future I become leader of my country. The best leader that I can do to make our people unite and freedom to do what they want to do.

What a Korean Student Ask for Filipinos

Turkish middle class students who are now in the Philippines to study English language cited that they choose to study in the country because it is more cheaper instead of going to the US or England since teachers and schools here are capable to trained them with competitive quality compared to the costly education from countries that mentioned above. This is also true among many South Koreans who are here to learn the English language.

Recently, i read something written by Nick Quaqin and realized that our history as a people is a tragic history. So tragic that we always tend to blame the foreigners and foreign powers than looking into ourselves as a people and to our leaders as well for the last 100 years. This realization is similar to what Jaeyoun Kim, a South Korean student who wrote an essay regarding why our country failed to progress. However, there are many factors why Philippines failed to develop as a society yet Kim's observation is worth reading by concerned Filipinos wherever they are.-albert

(As you know, we have plenty of Koreans currently studying in the Philippines to take advantage ofour cheaper tuition fees and learn English at the same time. 'When I went home to Iloilo last February, I observed the presence of South Koreans everywhere we went.I asked some of them why study English here. The response was - Filipinos speak clearly, slowlyand easy for us to understand than any other English speaking country in the world. ' --Vic Evaristo)

This is an essay written by a Korean student I want to share with you. This should be a wake up callto every Filipino. (Never mind the grammar; it's the CONTENT that counts)

MY SHORT ESSAY ABOUT THE PHILIPPINES

Jaeyoun Kim

Filipinos always complain about the corruption in the Philippines. Do you really think the corruptionis the problem of the Philippines? I do not think so. I strongly believe that the problem is the lackof love for the Philippines. Let me first talk about my country, Korea.

It might help you understand my point. After the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Koreans had to start from scratch because entire country was destroyed after the Korean War, and we had no natural resources. Koreans used to talk about the Philippines, for Filipinos were very rich in Asia. We envy Filipinos.Koreans really wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine. My father & brotheralso died because of famine.

Korean government was very corrupt and is still very corrupt beyond yourimagination, but Korea was able to develop dramatically because Koreans really did their best for the common good with their heart burning with patriotism.Koreans did not work just for themselves but also for their neighborhood and country. Educationinspired young men with the spirit of patriotism.

40 years ago, President Park took over the governmentto reform Korea. He tried to borrow money from other countries, but it was not possible to get a loan and attract a foreign investment because the economic situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea hadonly three factories. So, President Park sent many mine workers and nurses to Germany so that theycould send money to Korea to build a factory. They had to go through horrible experience. In 1964, President Park visited Germany to borrow money. Hundred of Koreans in Germany came to theairport to welcome him and cried there as they saw the President Park. They asked to him, 'President, when can we be well off?' That was the only question everyone asked to him. President Park cried withthem and promised them that Korea would be well off if everyone works hard for Korea, and the President of Germany got the strong impression on them and lent money to Korea. So, President Park was able to build many factories in Korea.

He always asked Koreans to love their country from their heart. Many Korean scientists and engineers in the USA came back to Korea to help developing country because they wanted their country to be well off. Though they received very small salary, they did their best for Korea. They always hoped that their children would live in well off country. My parents always brought me to the places where poor and physically handicapped people live. They wanted me to understand their life and help them. I also worked for Catholic Church when I was in the army. The only thing I learned from Catholic Church was that we have to love our neighborhood. And, I have loved my neighborhood. Have you cried for the Philippines?

I have cried for my country several times. I also cried for the Philippines because of so many poor people. I have been to the New Bilibid prison. What made me sad in the prison were the prisonerswho do not have any love for their country. They go to mass and work for Church. They pray everyday. However, they do not love the Philippines. I talked to two prisoners at the maximum-security compound, and both of them said that they would leave the Philippines right after they are released from the prison. They said that they would start a new life in other countries and never come back to thePhilippines. Many Koreans have a great love for Korea so that we were able to share our wealth with our neighborhood.

The owners of factory and company were distributed their profit to their employees fairly so that employees could buy what they needed and saved money for the future and their children. When I was in Korea, I had a very strong faith and wanted to be a priest. However, when I came to thePhilippines, I completely lost my faith. I was very confused when I saw many unbelievable situations inthe Philippines. Street kids always make me sad, and I see them everyday. The Philippines is the onlyCatholic country in Asia (second to East Timor), but there are too many poor people here. People go to church every Sunday to pray, but nothing has been changed. My parents came to the Philippines last week and saw this situation.

They told me that Korea was muchpoorer than the present Philippines when they were young. They are so sorry that there are so manybeggars and street kids. When we went to Pasangjan, I forced my parents to take a boat because it wouldfun. However, they were not happy after taking a boat. They said that they would not take the boatagain because they were sympathized the boatmen, for the boatmen were very poor and had a small frame. Most of people just took a boat and enjoyed it. But, my parents did not enjoy it because of love for them.My mother who has been working for Catholic Church since I was very young told me that if we just go to mass without changing ourselves, we are not Catholic indeed. Faith should come with action. She added that I have to love Filipinos and do good things for them because all of us are same and havereceived a great love from God. I want Filipinos to love their neighborhood and country as much as theylove God so that the Philippines will be well off.I am sure that love is the keyword, which Filipinos should remember. We cannot change the sinfulstructure at once. It should start from person. Love must start in everybody, in a small scale and haveto grow.

A lot of things happen if we open up to love. Let's put away our prejudices and look at ourworries with our new eyes. I discover that every person is worthy to be loved. Trust in love, because it makes changes possible.Love changes you and me. It changes people, contexts and relationships. It changes the world. Please love your neighborhood and country. Jesus Christ said that whatever we do to others we do to Him. In the Philippines, there is God forpeople who are abused and abandoned. There is God who is crying for love.

If you have a child, teach them how to love the Philippines. Teach them why they have to love their neighborhood and country. You already know that God also will be very happy if you love others. That's all I really want to ask you Filipinos.

(FOR THE LOVE OF OUR COUNTRY PLEASE SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ALL FILIPINOS YOU KNOW).

Isay said, Honest criticism hurts but it is an avenue for growth to become better. In our little place we can start making a difference by the little things we do and let the domino effect manifest. Hope you find in this essay something to discuss on the web.

"It is establishing a new order that is the difficult task."

But our question is simple: If Mrs. Aquino failed to achieve true reforms when she had almost absolute power during her six-year term, what promise can she hold for the Filipino people? And if the Church failed in the last 22 years to produce the leaders we deserve, what right does it have now to pass judgment? -Unfulfilled promise, Opinion, Editorial, Manila Standard Today, Friday, Feb.22, 2008

The more the military intervenes, the more the democratic institutions become weak. We do not want that. That is not the spirit of Edsa 1.
- Armed Forces chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr, GMANews.TV, 02/22/2008

It is not surprising that not one of the seven or eight presidential wannabes has articulated a vision for establishing a new order, which, as Neri-Jun noted, is the more difficult task than overthrowing President Arroyo. If they now scramble to do so, it would not be convincing since they would just be responding to a newly perceived deficiency which they had overlooked all these decades. -Neri-Jun is Right, by Antonio C. Abaya, Feb. 19, 2008, the Standard Toda

(From the article entitled: What is Neri afraid to say and Why?)

Here's the secret testimony of Jun Lozada on what Neri is afraid to tell thepublic. Being circulated by the black and White Movement. Lozada wrote this in Oct. 2007 and gave a co-IT Engr. Vicente Romano III leaving it to Romano when to divulge as he deems right.

For Immediate ReleaseContact:

Vicente R. Romano III - 0920.9615610
Leah Navarro - 0917.898.1957

Many speculations have been made as to what Neri knows about the ZTE-NBN most particularly the direct involvement of Pres. Gloria Arroyo in this abominable affair. After his damaging "Sec. May 200 ka dito" demolition of Abalos, the discredited former Comelec Chairman, many were left disappointed when Neri suddenly clamped up when the Senators started asking him about the nature of his conversation with Arroyo, no amount of coaxing, cajoling and threats was enough to break his Code of Omerta. The question on many people's mind was, What was Neri trying to protect when he repeatedly invoked "Executive Priviledge" during that gruelling 12 hour Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing on live television?

We have known the Truth all along as one of the few people that Neri confided his predicament during those fateful days of April 2006, and how he wanted to resign his post of NEDA Director General and Secretary for Socio-Economic Planning over this incident where he lost all his moral respect for Pres. Gloria Arroyo.

We are doing this document to give the public an understanding of this predicament. What is Neri afraid to tell the public? He is afraid to tell the public that after he reported the Abalos P200 million peso bribe offer, Arroyo casually told him to ignore it and work for its recommendation for approval anyway. That when he protested that it is too controversial and may attract the wrong kind of attention from media, Arroyo retorted back "Pakulo lang ni Joey yan and his father".

When he tried to reason that it may not be accommodated in the Chinese ODA package because it has been filled up with a list of projects already, Arroyo again ordered him to remove the low cost housing project and some water project to accommodate the ZTE-NBN deal in the ODA loan. That when he attempted to reason that it may not be approved in time for the Boao Forum which was only two days to go from that fateful April day, Arroyo with raised voice told him to include the ZTE-NBN project in the agenda of the following day's meeting of a combined NEDA Board and Cabinet Committee, who as expected promptly approved the project paving the way for the contract signing between ZTE and DOTC in China the next day. Neri is afraid to tell the public that this conversation took place between him and Arroyo because it might spark another impeachment complaint against Arroyo.

Why is Neri afraid to tell the public about this conversation with Arroyo? He is afraid that another impeachment will simply result to more expenses of public funds similar to the Hyatt 10 impeachment crisis, because as DBM Secretary who replaced Boncodin, he was entrusted with the large scale DBM payola operation of Arroyo to Congressmen, Senators and Governors not quite similar to the crude Panlilio incident that the public is witnessing now. He is afraid with a more partisan Andaya at the helm of DBM, more public funds will be spent to buy the silence and favour of these greedy legislators and local executives.

He is afraid that with Arroyo's firm control of public funds she can buy all the necessary support from most sectors of society to keep her in power.

He is afraid that even if the opposition knows about this conversation with Arroyo, he is afraid that the opposition will not pursue a serious impeachment proceedings against Arroyo, because it is not to their political interest that Noli de Castro becomes President in case Arroyo is impeached and becomes a more formidable political opponent in 2010. This insincere and unpatriotic goal of the opposition is already being manifested by the malicious speed that the Erap pardon is being cooked by Ronnie Puno together with the Erap camp to hastily put a united front of "Birds of the same corrupt feather" coalition against the emerging JDV led political opposition.

He is afraid that even if the Church knows the truth about Arroyo's direct involvement in the ZTE-NBN deal, the Church will still not call for her resignation due to the closeness of Arroyo's trusted lady liason to the Cardinal of Manila who was very effective during the "Hello Garci" crisis. That Arroyo's Religious Affairs Operators have the Bishops firmly in their "donation" graces, as again manifested by the quick rebuttal of the Mindanao Bishops' of the call of their fellow bishops in Luzon who where calling for the resignation of Arroyo just after Arroyo gave them a visit in Mindanao.

He is afraid that even if the military knows the truth about Arroyo's direct involvement in the fraudulent ZTE-NBN deal, the AFP brass is much to indebted to Arroyo for their position and the perks that goes with their position, that they have demonstrated this twisted loyalty with their willingness to detain, remove from the service and even shoot their own men for voicing out their legitimate concerns regarding the corruption and moral authority of their Commander in Chief. It is a sad spectacle to see the respected warriors of the Marines & Special Forces rot in jail with their ideals, while their men are dying even without receiving the measly P150 per day combat pay that was promised to them by Arroyo due to lack of funds & generals gets a gift bag similar to those given to the governors and congressmen just for having dinner with Arroyo the day after that infamous breakfast & lunch meeting where bribe money flowed scandalously free.

He is afraid that even if the Media knows the truth about Arroyo's direct involvement in the ZTE-NBN scam, Media will simply wither in the torrents of cash and favors similar to how the Hyatt 10, Hello Garci crisis were killed in the media headlines and Radio& TV coverages. Although he believes in the integrity of a handful of Journalist, he believes that a handful of these mavericks cannot withstand the hordes of paid lackeys of Malacanang. Especially that the Arroyo crisis team is now being handled by the best mercenary money can buy, from Ramos Sulo Operation, Erap's DILG and now Arroyo's troubleshooter, Ronnie Puno. Ably supported by the Media and PR money from PAGCOR being handled by Cerge Remonte to buy positive airtime, headlines and editorials.

He is afraid that even if the Business Sector knows about the truth of Arroyo's direct involvement to defraud the coffers of the taxes they are paying, the businessmen will be reluctant to rock the boat of the current economic uptrend, especially with the very close personal and business relationship of the so called leaders of the big business like Ricky Razon of ICTSI, Donald Dee of PCCI and Francis Chua of the Filipino-Chinese Federation to Arroyo herself. He is afraid that the hard earned remittances of Filipino OFWs that is keeping the economy booming and that can keep the economy afloat even under any administration is being wasted under this unholy alliance of Arroyo and her favoured businessmen.

He is afraid that even if the Civil Society knows the truth about Arroyo's direct involvement in the ZTE-NBN deal, that the Civil Society is now tired of mass actions after witnessing two failed EDSA revolutions, that Civil Society is now afflicted with a "Rally Fatigue" and cannot muster enough public outrage to denounce Arroyo's "corruption with impunity". He is afraid that the middle class is now indifferent to the corruption that goes around them, not realising that the middle class are the ones mainly carrying the burden of the loan payments for these corrupt deals. He is afraid that the middle class are more interested to become an OFW & to leave this country leaving their family and children behind, and may not care anymore about the crimes being committed against their country by its own President.

He is afraid that even if the Masa, the students, the workers knows the truth about Arroyo's direct involvement in the ZTE-NBN deal to steal precious resources from public funds, that they are now too poor and impoverished to be able to afford the time to join mass actions against the abuses of the Arroyo administration, that these former vanguards of mass actions in the country are now completely dependent on financial resources of professional organizers and have turned themselves into a "Rally for hire" groups rather than a true and genuine political gathering shouting for reforms.

He is afraid that the public may not know the extent of corruption in this country and may wrongly believe that they can cure corruption by simply replacing Arroyo with another person. He is afraid that the public may overlook the systemic and institutionalized nature of the source of corruption in this country, he is afraid that the people will again opt for a regime change without concern or a plan to correct the root causes of corruption in the country. He is afraid that people may not realize that it is not bringing Arroyo down that is difficult, it is establishing a new order that is the difficult task.

This is the predicament of Neri which I want people to realize especially to those who are asking Neri to tell the truth.

Lessons in Life

The following are my reflections in life that might be a point of reflections also to those who will read this:

1. One single act can ruined our life including all the things that we achieved. Thus, it is important to know what is wrong to our choices in life and how these choices will affect us and other’s perception.

2. The most important intangible things in life is our refutations, integrity and a good name for our children. A person may commit a series of mistakes in life, but that person in the end must not allow losing her soul along the way. (The bible in fact said that when we measure a particular integrity, it is the testament of others that is mostly important, yet it also said that whoever among you didn’t not commit mistake must first have the courage to throw stones to the other)

3. Allowing a space for doubt in our own capacity is a manifestation of a good virtue, which is humility.

4. Arrogance in life lead to death, while comparison with what others has lead to resentment. Resentment is breeding ground for carelessness and acts that destroy trust and confidence.

5. All of us is a struggling sinners to be good while others saintlty pretenders .

6. In the end, every mistake is a learning process. Mistakes are events to be corrected. On the other hand, mistakes lead to suffering yet suffering can be a healing process.

7. One day, I visited an office of a politician. I was in the 12th floor and seeing the cityscape, the mountains, lights and beauty of being in the top. But the scene remind me of one passage in the bible where the Christ was side by side with the devil while they are together in the mountain and tempting Jesus that if he will worship the devil, the latter’s earthly kingdom and treasurers will be given to him. In the same way that if we crave for power and anything in this earthly life, we may get it completely but vanish our soul forever.

8. In the same way that there are things in life that we cannot really control because of our limitation and capacity, it is in this idea that we need to define those things that we can particularly in the aspect of our life.

9. Dependency to God is the highest form of faith. Faith that must be a way to discipline and a life dedicated to God. It is for this reason that despite of my limitations and the darkness that we can see within our social institution, it is only right to be hopeful for God is faithful and provides justice through our little acts of courage. I wonder why some of my friends dances together with thieves, strive to get more even if they already have without realizing that what they only need is less.

10. For that matter, let us love the children for they are weak They are weak to understand the coercive side of our society. We may provide good future for our children not necessarily by deprieving other children's future. The children are vulnerable to pain yet at the same time they can be a source of inspiration and infinite hope.

Corruption is not a monopoly of the Adults

Magpakatotoo - series 1, youth and student voice - Listening to the Young Mind’s The majority of young people in the Philippines belong to the silent majority who are not heard, not given the chance to be heard, and if fact many are not heard not because they are not given the chance but because they refuse to speak because they do not want to be used by politicians, vested interest or other power trippers. Let us listen to some of them.
Magpakatotoo - series 2, youth and student voice - Youth Speak on Heroism and Patriotism Honoring the nation every flag ceremony or going to the rallies are stereotyping of patriotism, the following are youth insights on the issue of heroism and patriotism.

Corruption is not a monopoly of the Adults

Reading one article on corruption among the SK and reading articles regarding the Lozada case, I remember my paper at the Asian Social Institute. The following are the excerpt from page 114 entitled so young yet so corrupt (Buroklod, ASI, 2005) .
Having been dissapointed with the groups and people I met, I also never saw my generation making new paths of our own. My generation belongs to the so-called generation x who were born in the 1970's and are in their late 20's today (then of course). Older generations like the baby boomers are fascinated with us because of our line of thinking and the environment we live in.

However, as I have seen it, the idealism and energies of our generation are tainted by the older generation's greed and more refined greediness by our generation's sophisticaticated selfishness (remember Romulo Neri's statement to moderate their greed?) by our generation....I found out that corruption is not the monopoly of the older generation.
Reading today's young people, i look forward that they will be more detached to the corruption of our society.
----- * -----
I am not a fan of Joe De Venecia. In fact i don't like him as a politician. However, last saturday, i heard him in a radio interview in DZXL by Jarius Bondoc (Philippine Star columnist), that all of us are sinners and all of us need to change. Perhaps all along he is right.

Whether he is serious or not, we must accept it that our sociey, including we the people and our institutions alike are conquered by this dark clouds called corruption. I believe that it is a crime of treason when you stomach as a leader having a courage to put your country in debt by plunder and by soliciting kick backs while many decent Filipinos are decently working to earn a simple life and the vast majority do not eat decently because they don't have a decent work to support their children or family, forced to go out from the country, to send their kids to school, to heal their
sick relatives or to the end, provide a simple funeral for their departed love one.

It is an act of treason. And it deserve capital punishment. If we don't want to see our countrymen putting justice in their hands, let start to change and accept that premise that all of us are accountable because we create the kind of our leaders we have.

And for our leaders, to change so that they become an inspiration to the people that is sadly not happening....

Corruption in the SK - Ralph Anderson A. Rojas

Watching Lozado's expose regarding ZTE broadband deal, my heart bursts so much into anger to the extent that I can feel numbness with everything I hear about corrupt practices in our country.Corruption is indeed rampant in all parts of the country and in all institutions of the government. Differences only come in amounts - higher position means higher power equals bigger projects means probability of bigger commission. What is more, corruption is not just about commission and overpricing, it takes a lot more faces.

Even in Sangguniang Kabataan, this issue is not new. Many SK officials are indulged in corrupt practices. For example, when they purchase sports equipments, office supplies, uniforms, etc, they get 10% or more of their payment. Worse, other SK intentionally overprices the items by conspiring with the suppliers in order for them to gain more into their pockets.Another example is on sports tournaments where SK would make proposals containing the number of games which is more than what actually transpired.

They would process the papers according to their proposals and would convince the referees to sign and attest so that they could have the excess budget. Worse, some were able to liquidate even there was no event that really took place. Moreover, it is common that SK buys books for the youth of their barangay even many of those are not being utilized.

Some just buy these reference materials or encyclopedias just for the sake of having a project to be included in their accomplishment reports and oftentimes because of the commission they could gain. They not only defeated the purpose of the project but instead of more books are being purchased for their constituents, they spend the money for themselves. These were just some of the corrupt practices involving SK.

I know there are a lot more. What is more disheartening is that SK's fellow officials like the barangay captain, councilors and treasures are the ones teaching them the process. Yet, I always kept reminding my fellow SKs not to emulate such disgraceful deeds. I even talked with our accountant and auditor on how to deter these acts yet they told me that as long as the papers are complete, it is hard to falsify it. Truly, our government has weak accountability and auditing procedure and lots of loopholes in our laws.I really feel demoralized with the happenings in our country.

But I also believe that we have no difference with Abalos or FG if we are indulged in corrupt activities during our terms as SK.In our youth, I hope we could effect change. We could resist temptations if we are thinking not just of ourselves but of others. We should not follow the wind but rather adjust our sails, even we are alone. Though, in your term as public servants, you spend your own money in many occassions, it doesn't give you the right to compensate it through corruption.

Never rationalize illegal acts. For nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest, niether anything hid that shall not be known and come abroad (Luke 8:17) and he that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much (Luke 16:16).

A Congress for Our People

see this articles of youth and student voices ---> Magpakatotoo Listening to the Young Mind’s - series 1, youth and student voice

Last night, Jose De Venecia, one of youngest cabinet member appointed in the Marcos regime, the longest speaker of the House of Representatives was ousted because of contradiction within the ruling coalition party. Last year, 2007, the House as a separate chamber from the Senate celebrated its 100 year centennial anniversary even if in the official seal of the House stated that it was re-founded only since 1987.

In 1907, the Philippine Assembly was organized by the Americans in the Philippines for the purpose of preparing the Filipinos for self-governance ignoring the fact which was admitted by many Americans and their military officers then that the Filipinos themselves are capable of governing compared to their South American counterpart. It was welcomed by the large members of the Malolos Congress of the same first Republic of 1899, by the Negros Republic who are lead by land lords and the local elite in that province, the Federal Council of the Visayas as well as the Islamic sultans of Mindanao.

The Malolos Congress as a war congress representing the will of the people to be free from any foreign interest and to become equal before the law and opportunity for the Indios only to be betrayed by the same Malolos Congress members who represent them by invoking their sovereign will and the sovereignty of the Philippine islands in their recognition of the Treaty of Paris of 1898.

In 1935, a new constitutional arrangement was institutionalized led by Senator Claro M. Recto to effect a compromised between the American interest and the clamor for a genuine Philippine independence since the time of the Tagalog Republic of the renewed Bagong Katipunan of Sakay and the Rizaline Republic of Ricarte. In reality, the 1907 and the 1935 Congress are both debating clubs with a few powers to affect civil service, education and diplomatic affairs with less power to assert our sovereign will.

After World War II, a group of progressive legislators won in an election but was denied from their own legitimate seat in Congress to prevent them in rejecting the Parity rights that allows equal rights to the Americans to continuously exploit our natural resources.

Without the amendment no.6 of Marcos that give him the absolute hold in congress as well as his dictatorial power, the Batasang Pambansa is close to perfection. But by the virtue of martial law, that effort in 1971 to create a better parliament or legislative house was reduced and was perceived as a puppet institution of the Marcos regime. In 1987, a Constitutional commission drafted a constitution and after subjected to a plebiscite, a Freedom Constitution of Cory Aquino was effected in the light of the aspiration of the people who sacrifice themselves in the long highway of EDSA.

The 1987 was a mixture between great aspiration of our people to have a better society and the ugly side of traditional politics of elite democracy. The Congress, the Senate and the House, with some perseverance to be with the people in the issues of land reform, energy, debt servicing, health, education, housing, natural resources, civil liberties and an independent foreign policy was proven to become an assembly not of the people’s will but the will of traditional politics of patronage, transactions, political survival and family interest. I don’t dream of an anti-American Congress. The American people are not enemies. They have their own decent leaders and we have true friends from them in the pages of our history. However, today, we heard of other agreement where the longer consequence does not favor the Filipino interest. We have enough ZTE with China, the JPEPA with Japan and other more which our common people, though they know but refused to make a stand because they are tired of being used by conflicting forces of our society.

Let us hope that our new leaders will seized this moment and move forward while they invoked the call for change to return to the original Congress, when the idea of a people’s assembly was still in the mind of our genuine heroes in harmony to the collective aspiration of our long suffering people regardless of their regional orientation, religious belief, economic affiliation, ethnical identity and most importantly for those who are unheard, neglected, ignored and forgotten.

(In memoriam to those who fell but unknown barefooted peasant soldiers after defending the Malolos Congress in the start of the Philippine-American war)

EDITORIAL- our war with the Americans

The enemy is us Tuesday, February 05, 2008
(excerpt frm the Manila Times editorial)

Filipinos have survived centuries of colonization, by at least three nations, to reach this vital act in their life. They fought at least three great armies with inferior arms but with great courage. A few have said Filipinos could use the anvil of a civil war to forge a stronger bond, a clearer vision and a sense of purpose.

But sacrifices, small and great, have to be made. Quiet acts of heroism in the daily life could help. Doing volunteer work is a good start. Electing honest men and throwing out the bloodsuckers is another. Getting involved and having your voice heard matters. Our civic duties challenge us everyday. We have fought the Spaniards, the Americans and the Japanese to evolve into an inchoate nation.

It is time to fight our personal and collective demons, the wrong values and weaknesses of character that are our greatest enemy.

Peace begin in us – September 7, 2007

(this article is a response to a question, how can young people help rebuild society after a violent conflict?)

Peace can achieve by starting to search that peace in within.

In a society, destroyed by conflict, resolution can achieve by resolving the roots of contradictions that divide each country.

Solutions that were proposed to eliminate conflict and disagreements must be reasonably entertained and sources of future conflict must be addressed earlier.

Significantly, peace can only be achieved with honesty and justice. Providing justice for those who become victims of conflict and forgiving those who ask forgiveness. Justice must be in harmony to social justice, respect for human rights and eradication of the sources of conflict particularly poverty and greed-driven institutions.

How can young people help rebuild society after a violent conflict?

UNICEF is organizing a meeting about the role of young people in conflict situations this November in Jordan, and we want to bring your comments to the discussion! In unstable situations and emergencies, particularly during conflicts, young people are targeted for violence, abuse and exploitation.

They are often recruited by armed forces and separated from their families. Girls are especially vulnerable, and are at high risk of sexual violence, abuse and exploitation, as well as related health problems including HIV/AIDS.

Young people in conflict situations are forced to take on adult roles, and because the conflict takes away their opportunities, support and services, they can be forced into activities that are economically exploitative.

Their world can look like one that has no future, no hope. Their frustration sometimes leads to destructive behavior, and their participation in increasing violence and preventing peace and development is a big concern. Because young people are affected by and involved with violence during conflicts, it is really important to include them in humanitarian and peace building efforts.

There is a growing recognition that young people are a crucial component of any peace building initiative.

Young people have a positive role to play, too!

The Power of the Weak

Many years ago, Norman Vincent Peale said that if we can change our thoughts and we can change our world.

This is similar to the statement of Dr. Rana P.B. Singh of Cultural Geography and Heritage in Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India when he was here in Manila recently delivering a lecture on Hinduism. He said that if the problem begins in the mind, therefore the solution should also start in the mind.

This maybe similar to a problem of perception especially for individuals who cannot express their humanity freely just because they are slave of their own prejudiced driven system, unjust rules and perceived fair but often lead to unfair judgement.

This is the sickness not only of our own society but of individuals who are socialized and formed by institutions who project that they are caring yet in fact what is more institutionalized and rationalized within their social organization was the systematic coercion, prejudice and insensitivity to the needs of their people and misinterpretation of whateverthey think that is not similar to their own deduction.

In our time, social and psychological problems assumed to be resolved through dialogue and tolerance yet on the individual level, through a series of process and realization, each can have an opprtunity to see a larger picture with an open mind regardless of a codified belief and systems that can be consider as a world view of blind obedience, enslaving our own ability to ask, make questions, provide options, give alternative solutions without any harm or the danger to be condem.

Our world is a world full of constant problems. What is important is a constant hope. As Vaclav Havel said that hope is a state of mind, not of the world. Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good.

In Isaiah 40:29-31, Hope is something that gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Our own Domingo Landicho, a multi awarded Filipino writer here and abroad, said that Hope must be lived. In fact, we our selves must be that Hope.

For in this, we become strong whenever we are weak. As Paul of Tarsus have said, when I am weak I am strong.

So start re-constructing a new concept of your self and a new point of view of the world by starting in your mind...

For if you have a problem in mind, the solutions will always start in your mind. By changing our thoughts, we can improve our world.

On Fairy Tale and Sacred Things

I was attracted to reflect to a poem of Nicholas Roerich on Fairy Tale.

To him, fairy tale are legend's and have become life for we live it again many times.

As we go along to live it again, we change it over again and again. And as we touch the earth if not the earthly life, from the present in the process today will become part of the forgotten past.

Just like in life, Roerich said that sacred signs are there and often re-appeared but unseen. However, when it is greatly needed no one can really see it.

Perhaps, because we are not ready to see it.
Only for the sacred things to re-create life and the meaning behind it because we are too busy with our own legends.
We may not be able to see what is sacred for now since we continue our own fairy tale and wonder on how we can construct a new legend only to be forgotten?

Confronting Evil

On Jan 28, 2008 12:33 PM, banico albert wrote:

Dear Atty,

Allow me start from your own words:

Pardon per se is not wrong.

In fact, I believe in it as a necessary in restorative justice. But when there is a victim who has not been restituted to his or herloss, the granting of pardon without the victim's knowledge or consent could erodethe people's trust and reliance in the judicial system. We cannot afford the specter of a people taking the law into their own hands all because theycannot trust the system in delivering justice.

There has to be guidelines which must be applied with uniformity to all who would be pardoned, allowing only a reasonable window for executive discretion.

I believe in justice.

There is a saying that there is no genuine peace or reconciliation without justice. I think you are correct in saying that there should be guidelines to all who would be pardoned. I guess thre is a legislative if not a constitutional need for this.

However, the problem of forgiveness and delivering justice in this country is that it is a paradox.

Perhaps, in more serious sense, it is very hypocrite in nature. Criminals often are determined by how power is related between those perceived victims and the accused. This is the same with the one that we discuss before on the case of smith and nicole and feminism, remember in 2006? On the brighter side, the act of forgiveness in biblical term is very broad.

For me, forgiveness must be given to those who really experienced a change of heart, one who already suffer and willing to correct their ways. In fact Jesus or even Paul in the New testament encouraged the idea that God forgives and that our God of love pardons absolutely if we receive him in our heart. Yet, it is easy to say that an accused change her heart after realizing his crimes or all of her mistakes.

That is the beauty of pardoning despite of its uglyside. We pardon from the eyes of God and not from the premises of the human opinion. Our judgement is determined by our willingness to be open to the other side.

I believe in justice. But we are not God. I believe in humility but I also believe that everyone should have the courage to forgive even if it is very difficult. If we believe in God, in life and in justice, we must also develop the courage to forgive.

I am not a priest nor a moralist, but i think we must consider that every perceived victims and offenders alike are struggling to be good. We cannot confront evil by an act of another evil or becoming an Incarnated evil...

I think this a point of reflection and an act humility that a guideline you are talking about must be consider.

Our Human Collective Responsibility

Posted by albert banico on May 28, 2003 at 24:34:13: On The Spiritual Work of the United Nations and the Liberation of Humanity Discussion Area, Implementing the Four Freedoms on a Planetary Scale

Human Rights has been a long enduring document of our faith to human equality and freedom above gender, sex, religion, beliefs, economic status, race and nationalities.

However, it is imperative to review AND STUDY OUR HUMAN COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY as inhabitant of the planet and take into account our responsibility into planetary scale.

We always articulate our rights and our needs in sustainable development, peace initiatives and cultural sensitivity but we never declared and shared our responsibility or better write it as accountability as resident of this planet. all of us have responsibility to our selves, family, community, society, nations and the planet as a whole in what ever fields yet what we see is human irresponsibility and negligence of rights and duties.

We need to declare this even if it is a bizarre proposal.

Dear Albert,

Your point is well taken. Thank you for expressing this very important truth.

However, I also think that not enough attention is paid to Article 29 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which *does* refer to the "duties" each of us has to the community and to insure that everyone's rights are respected and honored. Perhaps it could be stated more explicitly and forthrightly.

Article 29 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Article 29

(1) Everyone has duties to the community in which alone the free and full development of his personality is possible.

(2) In the exercise of his rights and freedoms, everyone shall be subject only to such limitations as are determined by law solely for the purpose of securing due recognition and respect for the rights and freedoms of others and of meeting the just requirements of morality, public order and the general welfare in a democratic society.

(3) These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.

Of Gossip and Gossipers: An inter-disciplinary reflection

Albert Banico, 2004, mla
BS Journalism; MS General Sociology

If you love being in the company of gossipers and get excited whenever there are new gossip in town, circulating in your community or offices, definitely, this article is for you!!!

Gossips or rumors are common problems in any organization especially if communication is absent or inadequate.

Sources of Gossips
There are several causes of rumors and gossips. The most common are: fear, hatred, wishful thinking, jealousy, prejudice and selfishness.

People pass rumors to gain attention, to create excitement, to help them and to make others be interested in something he or she thinks that other persons want to hear.

Social Distinctions
If people in the neighborhood or in an organization are expected to exchange secrets and scandals, this norm will lead, at the very least, to a distinction between those who hold in high regard, those who really enjoy gossip, and those who offer tea and cakes as well, according to R. Dahrendorf, an American sociologist.

Motivations and Effects of Rumors
Of all gossips, those motivated by hatred and prejudice are the hardest to counter-act. Character assassination is one type of rumor that is very damaging. Gossips thrive and spread like wildfire and people easily believe them especially if they incite people to fear, to hate and to be hostile.

What Psychologists Say?
Psychologists emphasize that people who are not kept busy become nervous and anxious and if not well adjusted are more likely to be the source of rumors than others. This can be avoided by good channel of communication.

Lessons from Our History

Gossips would not be rumors if no one will do it and no one would like it. Historically, Filipinos love it because of our colonial past wherein our vulnerability and lack of freedom of speech resulted into different undesirable expressions.

Sociological Functions

Looking at the sociological functions of gossips and gossipers, we can find some interesting facts:
People don’t know how to use proper communication channels.
In relation to this, gossip exists because there is something wrong with the communication channel in an organization

Politically Correct?
In socio-political theory, gossips or rumors seem to be a means of social control mechanism in favor of those in authority to divide and rule the members in any social institution within our society.

Modern conflict theorist, like Randolf Dahrendorf, claim that gossip happens when the gossiper wants to control someone. It is born when someone desires to destroy the other person. By making gossip, rumors, chat, stories or any thing that will give attention, the gossiper gains certain power he wants. Therefore, it is a struggle for power. The result is the losing of one’s credibility at the expense of the other. If power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely, gossip then deceives while sustained gossiping deceives us absolutely.

A Culture of Death
In 1983, Dr. Scott Peck, a psychologist and author of the best seller book entitled, “Road Less Travel,” earlier wrote a book entitled “The People of the Lie,” where he explained the nature of the psychology of evil and the hope for healing human evil within us. He explained that we human beings can become an incarnated evil once we manifest the darkness within us instead of the brighter side of us, which is our goodness.

On the other hand, gossiping as a habit is a sad trait and can be considered as part of the culture of death and a manifestation of that psychology of evil as coined by Dr. Peck. At the end, the worst victim is the last receiver of the said gossip.

Back to Kindergarten

Communication and self-respect are the most important elements in this situation. Anything that will improve the means and ways of communication reduces and prevents the possibility of prejudice, conflict and bias.

Proper use of communication, a good channel of communication and remembering what we have all learned from kindergarten can avoid this. As Robert Fulghum remind us;

Share everything
Play fair
Don’t hit
Put things back where you found them
Clean up your own mess
Don’t take things that aren’t yours
Say sorry when you hurt somebody
Wash your hands before you eat
Flush (Flush the urinals and the toilet bowl after we use them)
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you
Live a balanced life. Learn some, think some, draw, paint, sing, dance, play, and work everyday some.
Take a nap every afternoon (But of course don’t if you have class, if you are cooking or driving a car)
When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.

With effective and kind communication, rumors can be handled and factual information is made available to all.

A Life Worth Living
There is commonality among great Asian beliefs from Buddhism to Confucian, in
Shintoism, Christianity or Taoism that in order to make a harmonious life, we must
always show our care and respect for life.

After all, as the Greek Socrates said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.”

Eks, Why, Z, the Nexs and Kikay Generation: Options and Hope for Youth Studies

(Toward a Framework to the Sociology of the Filipino Youth)
Institute of Youth Studies Position Paper on Youth Studies
____________________________________________________

Albert Banico, 2005, mla

Youth Studies is not a new idea in the Philippines.

It was conceived long ago without mentioning formally the name of the discipline. The physical evidence of this claim is the mountain of research, studies, facts, books, papers, outputs, blue prints, programs, history and struggle on the Filipino youth.

If we accept it sincerely, youth studies in the Philippines is rooted to our national history since the beginning of the first student reform movement was led by the first generation of the Propaganda movement entrenched in our Spanish controlled schools and colleges and influenced by the secularization movement of Father Burgos in 1770’s and up to the formation of our first republic in 1898.

Who can challenge the commitment and sacrificing generation of the youngest recorded officer of the Katipunan in the person of Emilio Jacinto and the “Boy” General Gregorio Del Pilar whose courage and heroism for the country are both unquestioned?

The only difference today is that we put a new name to that same interest on the Filipino youth by giving new institutional angle and of course an academic twist.

Youth Studies and Relevance

What is the value of any research without any bearing, importance or significance?

In any research, the significance of the study is always asked and put as a foremost priority before accepting the paper. These parameters determine the implication of the research to the larger society. However there are research because of novelty and “newness” to our ears and eyes, and because of that we entertain it as well as it entertain us.

This is not wrong in the spirit of academic freedom but on the other hand, the relevance not the just the significance of any study must be considered specially if we are talking about “government funds” in a time of “government tight spending” and is particularly directed towards a particular program. A P10, 000 can be an equivalent amount that can feed at least 65 poor and malnourished street children or juvenile delinquent for one day. An amount that can finance a better program that can be a sustainable initiative more than any other paper out puts.

It is in this line that we must put distinction between research for entertainment and real studies for the betterment of our society particularly the youth sector.

An Obligation for All

No person can separate him or herself to his or her beliefs and experience.

Any person is shape by his or her belief and experience. The more we expand our social experience for the benefit and the upliftment of the dignity others, the more we become involve to the lives of other significant or generalized others and as we move on from one experience to another, we expand our beliefs that we carry anywhere, anytime or whatever task we have in life. That is why value free thing in sociological research is an ultimate lie. It may sound as subversive to the principles of objectivity however, as advocates of progressive social change we must put the core values of service, truth and humility.

Youth Studies must not just be timely, but relevant to the need of the times.

Youth Studies for a Better Society

Recently, a screening committee for the candidates of the 5th National Youth Parliament at the National Youth Commission was held and the author was one of the panel member who asked the a question if what is the fundamental problem of the youth today to the candidates. The National Youth Parliament was the highest recommending body for the youth in the Philippines today and was a product of the Republic Act 8044 or the “Youth in Nation Building Act.”

The 10 candidates from the National Capital Region and the representatives of the marginalized sub-sectors of the youth pointed out the following as the main problems of the youth today;

Discrimination
Poverty
Education
Money
Fiscal crisis
Family
Self-centeredness
Health
Drugs
Low quality of life

One interviewee even mentioned that drugs as a severe problems in the country today seems very difficult because even if that there are regular news headlines about raids, discovered and captured big drug factories here and there and somewhere else but still in every localities or corner of the streets in the urban centers have drug users and pushers in the neighborhood. This kind of insight should be put into test so that social scientist can validate what is being reported in the news by mass media, by the government and what is visibly seen and experienced by young people or the general public as a whole.

If we will observed, most of the youth research in recent years often discussed the topics of reproductive health, sex, homosexuality, sexuality, gender, sex behavior, texting, sexting and other related topics that are being magnified and amplified by mass media.

In relation with this we can find a few end goals and after effect for the academe, mass media, general public, interest groups, lobby groups, private and public agencies;

To entertain us – the mentioned issues seemed entertaining for willing audience especially the latest sex behavior and drug stimulant among the young.

To influence or generate sympathy – lobby groups and interest groups are supporting these studies to generate constituencies for their cause of expanding the feminity among the males and for those who are in hiding to come up in the open than to resolve their personal confusion among themselves.

To get attention or constituency – the more forum for this topics the more constituency they can have not necessarily to understand but gain recognition that there is a phenomena such as the difference between the bi-sexual and the homosexuals/. That bi-sexual are separate entities and not totally gays. Straight gays will clearly say that this is a defense mechanism that they just can’t accept that they are totally gays and in a way this issues are entertaining for others.

To gain prestige – A professional and honorable researcher can mentioned that she is happy when her paper research is printed and accepted by her peers because it adds “prestige” to their institution and a validation from the people. Research that is not necessarily help for betterment of our lives, mindsets, behavior, quality of life and socialization but just to gain prestige. A research to get attention by organizing constituencies for our interests, sympathy and at the end to entertain our readers and ourselves especially the young.

Young people today have enough entertainment and perhaps so much of it that they less think and reflect among themselves to question the validity of their convictions and accepted perceptions of their social realities.

According to Epitacio Palispis, Vice President for Academic Affairs of the Asia Social Institute in (ASI) Manila, the Education Committee (EDCOM) spearheaded by the 10th Congress found out that in the last 50 years after World War II there are volumes of research pertaining the students which we never used.

This trend seems a prevailing culture in conducting research for research sake or for funding purposes and not to serve humanity specifically our countrymen particularly the youth.

Understanding the Filipino Youth

The Filipino youth according the Medium Term Development of 2000 constitute the 60% of our total population and increasing every year. This is significantly increasing in our young population of more than 82 Million according to the National Statistics Office (NSO).

Nobel Prize Winner and Mathematician John Nash said that numbers, logic, equation and reason ruled his interest. Applied and Scientific Social Research was even concerned with these variables. Yet, unlike Nash, he questioned the deeper meaning of logic and the questioned that who decide reason. And without talking the factors of numbers on the issue of who belong to the category of youth, we can only serve the youth well by understanding them from their own perspectives significantly their world view, mindsets and visions about the present, the past and their future not mentioning their individual and collective aspirations.

On the Filipino Youth?

The National Youth Commission recently embark whom they said as an ambitious program of gathering youth research studies confronting the youth sector. The studies according to the NYC will be collated from the academe, government institutions, college and graduate students, youth organizations and people’s organization located in all regions, provinces and cities in the country on the issue of Employment, Education, Health, Values, Youth Participation and Youth with Special Needs.

The NYC was created by the RA 8044 as an expression of the youth empowerment institutionalization in the Philippines. It aims to involve the Filipino youth in a different form of adventure, which is in nation building. The youth nation building mechanism or youth empowerment vehicles in the country includes the Sangguniang Kabataan created in 1987 from a National Youth Consultation in Mariang Makiling, Laguna to end the Kabataang Barangay of the late President Ferdinand Marcos. This consultation produced three major proposals, which include the creation of the SK, the NYC and the National Youth Assembly in the expression of the National Youth Parliament.

Looking from the said proposals, it can be said that all of the three are tested and what is needed is to re-assess and evaluate the performance of the three youth representations in the country since all of them represent the empowerment institutionalization in the country today.

Several papers from Christopher N. Magno, Florante Gonzales, the College Editors Guild of the Philippines and Clarence M. Batan calls for re-thinking, reform or even radically reconstruct the current youth empowerment project in the Philippines.
The papers especially from Batan (2003) “Agenda for Youth Research in the Philippines, CEGP (1996) “SK and elite politics, Magno (2003) Wakas ng SK and others significantly consider the age in the political socialization of the youth and the corruption of the young people in the process of socialization in the said representation in our government institutions especially the paper of Magno and the CEGP.

It is significant to look into consideration the evaluation of the Youth Empowerment in the Philippines if it is really the expression and sentiments of the current generation or there is a need to change or abolish for example the Sangguniang Kabataan as what Magno said in his paper.

Liberating the Youth from their Adult Sentiments

Dr. Jose Rizal more than a century said that the youth is the fair hope of the Mother land. Philosophically speaking Rizal is rationalizing the natural necessity of a any society to put hope among the young especially if the rest of the adult generations are hopelessly corrupted by their own doing.
However, philosophically also the youth also are wasted in their young especially if they lack guidance among the peers and between good adult and elders in their formative years and environment. Idealism therefore is not the monopoly of the youth especially if they don’t have good role models.

In case of identifying the real identity of youth which is an obvious problem in determining the framework and starting point of any research and studies for the youth. Samuel Ulman said that the youth is a state of mind, which means that the elderly can also be considered as youth not in physical qualities but in emotional qualities and quantities.

Philosophically, this claim by Ulman can be a good consideration given by the fact that this idea established emotional solidarity among young and old alike. Giving the older ones to intervened on the aspirations of the young. Politically, the implications of this is that older generation can affect and influence to the leadership, goals and nature of organizations that young people want to effect or realized. This may lead to negative or positive effect among young people because the elders or adult than is leading them by determining their own way of right action or their own aspiration.

On the lighter side this philosophical input of Ulman can also promote a genuine inter-generational cooperation among generations. But this not mean that older people will exercise power or coerce younger generation to direct their aspiration from the context of their ideas of the older ones. In this premise the genuine biological and psychological characteristics and qualities of the youth must stand alone in the process of defining their own convictions, dreams and aspirations as long as it is not detrimental or coercive too to the other generations particularly in the Philippine setting.

From this framework of understanding we can generate options to produce more research papers and studies for the youth.

Power and Movements

In liberating the youth from the oppression of the older ones and from any other generational myths and delusions, we must also considered the movements of the youth today and the way they inter-act, cooperate and antogonised each other if there is?

The future youth studies must deepen the understanding how powerful really are the young today and who decide and determine their aspirations? Are they really intelligent compared to the older ones? Are they really more dumb than the more intelligent generations of the past and Are we really want to empower the youth or we are just using the idea of empowerment while corrupting and controlling the mindset and behavior of the Filipino youth?

The answer can be find from a sincere research that understand the youth and not just want to delude the public and entertain the young. And Youth Empowerment building and institutionalization that aims not just to generate the sentiments and pulse of the young but produce and generation that think, read and act for the welfare not only of themselves but for the common good.

Quo Vadis Kikay Generation?

Several years ago, children in the streets will dance and play as if this children’s play are part of the innocence of the child’s play. At the same time, not so long ago, nursery rhymes were the one being sung by these children in the school together with folk and songs from our provinces. Songs that expresses the lullaby from a mother to a dear loving child.

Decades ago, young people chant in unison as if they are praying and saying a sacred mantra from a Marxist perspective of the world such as learning from the masses and serving the people. In our time, children and youth dance, sing and behave in the tune of the same songs that we only hear during a child’s play. The only difference is that it is being danced and sings in our mass media with half-naked dancers chanting and moving in an erotic fashion.

Children and teens continue to sing and dance with lesser critical thinking from what there hear, sing and dance. For the young, life is a song and a venue to be entertained in a daily life of personal struggle, family problems, confusion and emotional misery.

Dr. Joel Rocamora of the Institute of Politics and Governance once said that one day the youth would find their place under the sun. Let us hope that this place under the sun is not an environment where dignity and self-respect are disregarded in exchange of their survival. If young people today love to dance like Kikay (playful and flirt full) is because of the reason that they don’t find anything wrong about it even if the dancers and singers of this musical song wears revealing dresses in a morning news and public affairs or in a noon time show where parental guidance is a must.

This phenomenon reflects the innocence of our dear young people on the implications of whatever choices they make. It sounds negative, but it is also positive on the other side because this innocence if we can only re-channel by producing more youthful and youth-friendly socialization can re-charge our own idealism and the imagination of the young for a good and sustainable future through a youth research and studies as a framework.
